Memphis owes us their first round pick — top 6 protected this upcoming draft, or an unprotected one the following year (2021).
While the unprotected one sounds lots more enticing, it’s probably more likely the Grizzlies will be a better team next year, than they will be this year, as Ja Morant and Jaren Jackson Jr. get more seasoning under their belt.
We should thus be rooting for Memphis to finish 7th in the standings this year.

And I would think this would be the year that Memphis would want to hand us over their pick, as there’ll be no generational great talent in this draft.

Gotta disagree DM. Im hoping the pick carries over to 2021. Id much rather roll the dice on a top 3 pick next year than a 7+ pick this year.

In 2016 and 2017 Brooklyn had no reason to tank, but they ended up being terrible and Boston got the 3rd and 1st picks respectively.

I wouldn’t the 7th pick this year cause there are 3 intriguing guys I’m interested in (as of 11/7/19 — my opinion might change as I get a better understanding of their game). Isaiah Stewart, Jaden McDaniels and Tyrese Maxey. With guys like Anthony Edwards, Cole Anthony and James Wisemen almost locks to be among the first chosen, the 7th pick might allow us to get one of the guys I mentioned. This is without knowing who’s coming out in the 2021 draft, though. As of right now, I haven’t heard of a generational talent coming out of that draft either.

I think "generational" is an overused term in the NBA. I am mid 40's (age). Lebron James is a generational player. Next tier, are very good players, some are Hall of Fame worthy now (even though they are still playing), however not generational.
On a side note, an unprotected MEM selection might have more trade value than a protected selection.

I see the pick conveying this year as mention in this thread, I don't see MEM being consistently bad enough in 2021 especially with some of their young core players they're building right now. Need to research a little more for this draft. Unfortunately, high school eligibility rule won't be in the works until 2022 so its getting close on cashing on this asset.

And while it seems Memphis is trying to turn the corner, there are some bad teams out there who are either tanking, or are simply not as good as Memphis. So this pick could very well be ours this year. Let’s hope it lands at 7.

Are there any promising big men who are likely to be there at [HASH]7? I'm not really interested in adding more wings, and we're set at PG too.

James Wisemen could slide because he may not be the prospect many were thinking he’d be. But there are some bigs that I’m liking — Charles Bassey, Isaiah Stewart, Vernon Carey, N’Faley Dante, Obi Toppin, Jeremiah Robinson-Earl, etc. And these guys may be available later in the draft.

Currently, the Grizz are in 7th place, which is the best pick we’d get from them if the pick converts this summer. Lots of good prospects to choose from at that spot.

It's looking more and more likely that the pick will convey this year. Memphis is closing in on .500 after a bad start and the pick may not even be in the lottery. Right now, on Jan 11, they are in 8th place in the West.

I don't know. They've won 6 in a row and 8 of 10. But even if they finish 9-12 in the West, we'll most likely get their pick.
