No one can accurately grade this draft until a few years have transpired and we see what becomes of Romeo Langford (6'6" wing), Grant Williams (6'7" PF), Carsen Edwards (6', combo) and Tremont Waters (5'11", PG). But what we can do is give a draft day grade on how we feel at the moment it happened.
I would have given this draft a solid A if we took Langford, Bitadze and Jerome -- but we missed Bitadze by one draft slot (Indiana took him just before us), and we traded Jerome away in order to get a future draft asset (MIL's 2020 pick that is 1-7 protected, or unprotected in 2021) and dump Bayne's salary, which is necessary for what Ainge is aiming to do this free agency.
My grade for a Langford-Williams-Edwards-Waters draft is B- to C+. I really like the Langford pick, who has a chance to be a solid 3rd/4th scorer as a modest ceiling, which is not bad for a 14th pick (a more optimistic outlook is Tatum's equal). I'm underwhelmed with the Grant Williams pick. I'm trying to like this pick, and he does have some endearing traits (lunch pail player) -- but unless he can effectively space the floor with solid outside shooting, and be a disrupter defensively, I think his average foot speed, lack of huge wingspan to overcome a subpar 6'7" height, and low level athleticism limits his potential.
Carsen Edwards could be a terrific pickup, so he brings my draft grade to a solid B. His calling card is knocking down shots, and if he can do that when called upon, he'll keep defenses from doubling up on Hayward and Tatum. He could be a better version of Shane Larkin (a pitbull version) -- a change of pace little guard who gives defenses fits.
Tremont Waters is a filler pick to me. I don't get the impression he'll have a career in the NBA. But there wasn't really a guy who I really wanted, so it's no big deal.
Granted, there wasn't a whole lot of high level prospects in this draft, and I feel this draft can trump our most recent drafts:
2015: Rozier, Hunter, Mickey, Thornton
2014: Smart, Young
2012: Sullinger, Melo, Joseph
... and even potentially better than the 2016 draft with Jaylen, Yabusele, Zizic, Jackson, Bentil, Nader (Langford could turn out to be better than Jaylen if Jaylen doesn't reach his ceiling).
