I’m done with drafting athletes with questionable intangibles (Rozier types). From this draft going forward, I want to pick draftees who exhibit these traits:
-discipline -high level basketball acumen (IQ) -mental / physical toughness -high motor -scoring efficiency (good shooting %)
(Added bonus) -highly athletic -great defensive potential -can play more than 2 positions
One guy who checks a lot of these boxes, who probably will be there at 14 is Ty Jerome. He’s one guy I’d be happy to take at that slot.

Ask them what is most important to them. If they say, being an All-Star, or winning a scoring title, pass. If they say Winning, grab 'em.

Do the little things that help your team win games? Or score lots on a team that falls short of its goal? Another guy who will be there with our 22nd pick, or maybe in the 2nd round is Admiral Schofield. An undersized PF, but is a competent 3 pt shooter who also checks lots of my boxes.

Frankly, I am done with drafting players that are tweeners, and the hope is that they develop a skill not previously demonstrated.
On my wish list are players that fit in Brad's read and react offense (system).

Another red flag for me is to draft a high usage player who only put up nice numbers (but not great), and couldn’t lead his team far.

How about someone who is a great shooter, especially if we get AD and keep Kyrie. Assuming GH is back and his old self, we don't need more guys who can create their own shot - just people who can knock down the open shots that the other guys create. Who was that kid who had the huge game in the NCAA tourney this year?

Role players who excel in their roles.

If BOS keeps all three selections, I vision Danny selecting (1) SG, (1) BIG, and (1) swing.

Assuming all things equal, yeah I can see Ainge considering big men. Horford and Baynes are short timers, and we don’t really know what we have in Robert Williams.
Maybe a SG. The past 2 years, Ainge has found cheap backup PGs / SGs from the international pool (Larkin, Wanamaker), so maybe he can find more solid backcourt players.

Austin Ainge has done great with International finds. Theis, Larkin, Wanamaker.

Bruno Fernando might be a consideration. I like his strong body, athletic burst and aggressiveness. Maybe not quite the stretch big, but defensively, he seems like he could fit.
My personal pick for a big man is Gova Bitadze. Really hoping he’ll be there at 14.

This draft seems to me to have a lot of prospects who will never be mentioned as future stars, but may end up being solid contributors for their team.
I'm looking at Chuma Okeke for Auburn -- he's no lottery pick, but wouldn't surprise me if he has a better career than Nassir Little.
And there's a handful of ho-hum type players like him that I'd be happy to grab with our late 1sts (20 and 22).

Granted, it only works when you have a foundational player (ex: Tim Duncan).

I read what I thought was a really good article about how the GS Warriors trio of Curry, Thompson and Green fit so well together that their whole is so much more than the sum of their (very good) parts. That element of "How does this player fit with our current group?" is overlooked by virtually everyone in favor of "Who has the most upside?".
If we keep Kyrie, and trade for AD, what draftable player fits best with them? 3 and D type? Backup PG? Glass-eating big man? If we hope to avoid another TR situation we need guys who are good role players.

Assuming we have to give up a king's ransom to get AD (Jayson, Jaylen, Smart, high draft picks), we're going to need to reload the roster with efficient role players. Here's a list of "safe" players I like outside of the lottery who don't necessarily have great potential, but have a shot at making a nice career as role players. Cameron Johnson, 6'8" 3-D Grant Williams, 6'7" rebounding tough guy with a slight inside scoring touch Tyler Herro, 6'5" 3-pt shooting / scorer *Goga Bitadze, 6'11" tough fairly mobile Center who is a savvy scorer in the post, can hit 3s, rebounds and blocks a bit Carsen Edwards, 6', sparkplug scorer, backup PG Isaiah Roby, 6'8", versatile scorer *Chuma Okeke, 6'8" swiss army knife *Ty Jerome, 6'5" backcourt player who does a lot of things well Dylan Windler, 6'8" wing, mostly a 3pt threat Bruno Fernando, 6'10" bruising big man (he might go lottery) Jontay Porter, 6'11" Raef LaFrentz-lite Aubrey Dawkins, 6'6" shooter
