After watching Duke go down in the Elite 8, after almost losing their two previous games, I'm more convinced than ever that Coach K (not going to look up the spelling) is more a great recruiter than a great coach. Most people seem to think Duke is going to have 3 guys go in the top 10 of the draft, including possibly the first two. They had far more talent than anyone else this year. It seems to me his teams underperform more often than not.

In 39 years coaching Duke, he has won 5 national titles. I would have thought he’d have more, with all the top recruits he gets yearly.
Brad Stevens and his underdog Butler Bulldogs nearly beat Coach K.

Agreed. I always pick them losing in the elite eight. It seems Duke has been [HASH]1 or favorites many times in his 39 years.
I'm interested in what coach has coached the most players who went on to become all-stars or hall of famers since you mention his recruiting.

I have mixed feelings, because of the 1 and done rule. The NCAA tournament is now geared to maximizing profits, and seeding is iffy. I am UCONN fan, and twice they won the tournament being a high seed (bad seed), but had 1 player literally carry them. Ex: K Walker, S Napier.

I don't know about overrated, but over the hill maybe. Definitely underachieving these days. He's better than Calipari though.

This should have been their year. You've got a generational talent in Zion, a likely top 3 pick in RJ Barrett, another likely lottery pick in Cam Reddish, and a highly touted PG in Tre Jones.
Gee, if you can't win with that kind of talent, something isn't right there. And you're right about Calipari -- guy gets the cream of the crop talent as well.

I think Calipari is an average coach, however an elite recruiter.

Coach K is an elite recruiter as well, but Coach Calipari has coached 27 seasons. In that whole time he has only made the final 4 six times. Four of those times are at Kentucky. And he only has one ring. It's a pretty significant underachievement. One year at Kentucky he had multiple draft picks, including some lotto picks (that was the Nerlens Noel year) and he got bumped in the first round of the NIT. Coach K has coached 44 seasons, several of which was at Army. He has 5 rings and 15 final fours. He's done far better at a far more rigorous academic institution.

When you consider the top end talent Coach Calipari has had, his championship record is terrible. Ex: #1 NBA selections overall: Wall, Davis, Towns. However, this year's Duke team was a major disappointment.

For me the difference is that I think it's widely accepted that Calipari is more of a great recruiter than a great coach, whereas Coach K has maintained the rep of a great coach long after it was true.

I think the acceptance is the fact that Calipari has had multiple programs banned (UMASS, UMemphis). However, Coach K still has time.
