This from Brad: βItβs never been important to me who starts, as far as it being the five best or whatever. Itβs more how they complement each other and how they complement your best players that are going to get the majority of the attention.β
Right now it's Kyrie, Gordon, Al and the rest to be determined, with lots of ways to go. He also said that part of the equation is the needs of the second unit, so that a guy who was perfectly capable of starting (he mentioned Olynyk from last year) might be more valuable coming off the bench.
I can't wait to see all the guys in action as I don't have a great handle on their games. All the new bigs are a particular mystery to me.
I think Brown will start. If his role is to be defensive stopper of the other team's best player - as he's said, it only makes sense for him to be in there right from the opening tap. And being in there with the Big Three he shouldn't have to create his own shots which is not his strength
Right now I think Tatum will come off the bench. The second unit will need scoring and he should get more touches, and a better chance to develop, off the bench.
That leaves Smart to come off the bench as well. Supposedly he's quicker and more explosive. He says he's finishing drives hard this year. In the past, he's been pretty steady as a ball-handler, but hasn't been able to turn the corner on anyone. If he can do that, and his shot is as improved as he looked in that video we saw posted here, he'll be a solid PG for us. He and Rozier often played together last year and I expect more of the same. I'm looking for big steps for both of them.
Maybe someone can break down the bigs for us.
