I love Smart's defense, but he kills me with his offense. He lacks skills and polish.
But his defense is game changing.

Watching some stuff last night at one point the Warriors went with Durant, David West, and Draymond at the forward spots with a big wing (Iguodala) at sg and Curry. (The Cavs were countering largely with their starters....Love, Tristan T, Bron, JR Smith, Kyrie)
Soooooo.....you want me to beat that?
Do I get a time machine?
If I get a time machine this is what I do....
These are the players I choose designed to beat a team like this
Curry killers.......Dennis Johnson, Magic Johnson, or Jason Kidd. Give me a big dude that makes Curry play defense.
Klay Thompson killers....I'm fighting fire with fire.....give me some great big sg that takes it to the rack and fights you. Maybe Paul Pierce
Kevin Durant attacker......Scottie Pippen......someone with some suffocating defense that you have to respect on offense.
Now for bigs......I want....young Arvydas Sabonis. Or Tim Duncan. Or Kareem. Or Hakeem. A shooter, passer, rebounder. Kevin McHale....decent outside shooter. Very capable of mixing it up. Same for Malone.
Draymond killer......Dennis Rodman.
I don't see how you assemble this team in the modern era.
What I do think is the Warriors are probably the best finess/skills team ever so I think the way you deal with that is make them play against size. Make them play against strength. Stifle them with defense. Make them use fouls.
I think the 2007-08 Celtics had a lot of the elements needed to beat this team. Very strong defense but also very strong offense based on excellent shooting, slashing, and ball movement. Even some of our bench players were well suited to fighting the Warriors. Guys like Powe, but maybe even Eddie House.
I think a major part of good defense is good offense. Making people run and getting them tired and making them use fouls.

I think present players in the league (or almost in the league) with Warriors beating abilities...in no order
Anthony Davis.....TAKE THAT!
Lonzo Ball if he commits to defense....he's sorta my Kidd
a very strong aggressive shooting guard....maybe Paul George, Jimmy Butler
Very strong athletic forwards....Jaylen, Josh Jackson, Kawhi Leonard
Healthy Blake Griffin
Fultz if he commits to defense
I think you need players that can and will take it to the rack. Kevin Durant, Klay Thompson, and Curry would love nothing better than to get in a three point shooting contest with you. They are very good 3 point shooters. Don't play that with them. Don't come at them with Dirk.
I think you need to get them feeling very uncomfortable. You need to take it to them. You need to go over them and make them use their fouls and send them to the bench. If you get past their guards into the paint that's where Draymond whacks you....which is why you need enforcers that can dunk to deal with him. I don't think you should try to take him out to the perimeter.

You also still need a decent bench. They spend all their money on their big 4 so hopefully their bench is weak but I think they have some bench guys that can play a little. Zaza. Javale McGee. Shaun Livingston. Patrick McCaw. David West.
You have to have some guys that can take advantage of that.
I don't think a guy like Crowder has a chance in heck at beating a KD but he could be one heck of a 2nd unit guy against the Warriors

The Celtics have played them very close in the last 4 games they played, taking them to OT in Boston last season at the end of that long win streak they had and then beating them in GS - also breaking a long win streak there. Again this season, the Celtics beat them in GS - Only team to do so the last 2 years.
The Celtics beat them by playing physical and making it a grind out game rather than letting them just run and shoot. I think with an upgrade in talent on the Celtics, as long as they don't water down the defense, will put the Celtics in a decent position to contend with them. But they need to keep their physicality and defensive identity to do so.

I doubt this year's BOS team would have won, however a piece or two could make the difference next year, or the year after.
