As Ainge overhauled our roster by trading everyone away (only Bradley and Sullinger remember playing with Paul Pierce and KG), lots of new faces came through the door. Along with acquiring lots of players, Danny has also obtained lots of trade exceptions.
Some are small dollar amounts, some are substantial. Some expire next year, some expire this summer (and if we don't use it, we lose it).
We cannot combine trade exceptions to make a bigger lump sum, or use it in conjuction with players being traded away.
Here are some that we have:
12.9 million (obtained from Dallas in the Rajon deal, expires 12/15) 7.7 mil (obtained from Memphis for Tayshaun Prince, expires 2/16) 1.3 mil (obtained from Phoenix for Marcus Thornton, expires 2/16)
There are lots more, but they are less than a mil each. In total we have 25 million in trade exceptions, but that doesn't mean we can trade for a player who makes $25 mil.
How it works is if we want to complete a trade without sending away a player on our roster, we can send them the trade exception instead. So lets say we want to do a trade with Team X (lets say the Hawaii Pineapples) for that awesome player named DerrenMatts, who makes 10 mil a year. But the Celtics don't want to trade away any of their players. We we can do is use most of the 12.9 mil we received from Dallas in the Rondo trade, and send that to the Pineapples in exchange for me.
I'm excited to see how Ainge will use these exceptions this summer -- especially the one we got for Rajon. It expires in December, but Danny may end up using it now.

DM puts up nice stats, but can he play any defense? Ainge seems to like those tough, gritty players, not those show-boating Hawaiian types.

Haha, actually I'm one of them gritty types who may not be All-Defense, but play pesky defense. I'm like Delladedova, I guess.
Certainly not worth 10 mil -- I'd have to pay teams to sign me!

In the past Danny has let several TPE's to expire without using them. I think he will try to use the bigger ones though. Another thing about the TPE's is that if you are under the salary cap you lose the MLE, BAE and TPEs. I'm not sure where they stand with the cap right now after their signings,

That's interesting. Maybe Ainge signed those deals specifically so he could use this stuff.

To be under the cap we would have to renounce all of our TPE, the MLE, etc. The one rumor I have heard is that Boston may use their Rondo TPE in a SnT with Toronto. I don't know if that is possible with the new CBA, but if so, that would would allow us to use the rest of our TPEs as well as the MLE.
