Celtics signed Amir Johnson who is a long, athletic big man who 28-years-old. According to Woj, he signed for 2-years, $24 million total. He's a good rebounder, a solid shot blocker, and does many of the "little things" on defense.
The Celtics also re-signed Jonas Jerebko to a two-year, $10 million deal. Not exactly fireworks but some nice sparklers on the first day of free agency.

Jerebko is a value contract. Johnson, $12-million a year is not, however it is only 2-years.

I was surprised at the 12 million per year for Johnson, but I do like what he adds to the team. As FL pointed out, he makes us better defensively and on the glass, plus made 41% of his three point shots per espn, which is definitely something we need. Only 2 years, so not a long term commitment. It's like teams are paying out based on what they know the salary structure will be like when the TV money kicks in.

Also, something I just read about the contracts we signed today:
And here's the kicker: The Boston Herald noted that the final year of both deals are expected to be non-guaranteed (the guess here is that Johnson will have a partial guarantee when the deals are signed). If the signings simply don't work out for Boston, or there's a desire to pursue cap space next summer, the Celtics will have an ability to move on, particularly when non-guaranteed deals typically carry high trade value.
Makes the signings look more shrewd - an upgrade with flexibility.

Thanks for the update Mev. That makes the Jonas and Johnson deals a lot more palatable. In the words of some wise forgotten person, there is no such thing as a bad one year contract.
Plus, deals like that are often work well in trades.
This news made this off-season a lot better for the C's.

Add in Wallace's expiring contract next year, that would be an open slot for max contract when teams have already squandered their cap space this year.

Danny Ainge finally gets his man, Amir Johnson. I remember in 2005, hearing that Ainge wanted AJ, but for some reason didn't take him in the 2nd round (even with 2 picks, that we ended up using on Ryan Gomes and Oriene Greene). I thought maybe we would have a shot at him in the Undrafted Free Agency, but the Pistons took him with the 56th pick (a few shy before the end of the draft).
Overall, I like the pickup, but feel its a bit expensive. He gives us versatility in the trenches, which is what Brad wants.
