Update: McGee is not signing with us. Ainge wanted a team option next year, McGee wants a players option. He's back on the market.
Danny confirmed on the radio that the Celtics are close to signing JaVale McGee on a contract that would run through next season. Seems like a low risk, high reward type of signing. Here's Danny's take on the signing
Proof that Danny's behind the push for the playoffs. This signing can only help. Not sure who will be cut to make room but my guess is Shav since he doesn't figure much into the Celtics plans.

You're in luck Eja! After countless stories on blogs all over the internet saying the celtics were close to signing him. And after Danny spent time on the radio talking about how he fits with the Celtics, it's now being reported that McGee won't be signing with the Celtics because the Celtics wanted team option for next season and McGee wanted player option for next season and they couldn't agree on it so therefore no contract. BUT who knows. Maybe they will get it done eventually but for now it's off.

Playoff push, but ultimately fools gold.
Silver lining is McGee is only 27, has proven he can play in this league, and had physical tools to succeed. Just needs to realize what he's got to do to stick and become the best player he can be.

Too bad IMO. Yes the guy is a bonehead but he' has potential, he's an athletic 7ft shot blocking center, exactly what we need. he would have been a low risk high reward guy.

maybe with a perfect cntract it would have been great, but I wouldn't want him getting in the way of Zeller. I don't think he would beat out Zeller or KO and then I think he might have sulked and pouted. Just not a great fit

McGee is one those players, maybe a fit on a veteran team. Aka, BOS 2007 edition. However, not a good fit for a young team.

I think that Danny knew that and that is why he wouldn't go through with the deal without a team option for next season. Give him a 20 or go game try out and if he didn't work out, cut bait and move on. Danny didn't want to saddle himself with an albatross if McGee didn't work in the system and if he truly is a chronic head case and wouldn't respond to Stevens or the system.

McGee is the polar opposite of a Steven's player. Low basketball IQ.

It makes me wonder if the money was more than minimum. Because if it was minimum you could just send him home or waive him or buy him out and it wouldn't hurt much. Maybe there was a concern that we would need roster spots for our draft picks.

Hopefully more info leaks out about this. It would be interesting to know what the contract offer was.

I thought it was because he wanted a player option and we wanted a team option. Though I wanted to sign him we needed the team option. Celtics can't afford to give time, have him play well and then demand to get paid after a 25+ game or so try out.

Danny is trying his best to keep salary flexibility for this summer.
Don't know exactly who he's aiming for, but he's up to something this summer.
