Time for "Pretend You Are the GM". Now that Rajon is gone, and you have lots of young players and assets, what are you going to do? How will you build your team?
Right now, with the players I currently have, I think I only have 2 legit starters, and they are Jared Sullinger and Marcus Smart. Sully is a solid starter, but not an All-Star, who will give me double digit points and come close to double digit rebounds. 15 and 9 are probably what he'll give me throughout his prime. That's more than enough for a non-star starter. Marcus Smart is not a high assist PG, but he's a leader and plays exceptional tough nosed defense. He can start at Point for me. If James Young can live up to his promise, he's my starting 3, but it'll take a few years to know what we have.
Olynyk is better suited off the bench, as is Avery Bradley. Solid contributors, but not starting caliber for most playoff level teams. Zeller belongs in this group as well. Pressey is a personal favorite of mine, and he belongs here too.
For the next couple of years, we're not making the playoffs, and we're not bad enough to be a high lottery team. We're going to continue to pick in the 8 - 14 range. We're probably not going to find superstars, so what I'll need to do is draft Brad Stevens-type players; smart, skilled, disciplined guys. Hopefully I'll strike some luck and find above average players who can be solid starters. But what I'm trying to do is provide Brad with a roster full of good players who will thrive in his system.
Now, the trick is to field a competitive team built upon young players who we've drafted and developed, and mix in some solid free agents who don't cost too much.
Once we reach this level, that's when we look to trade for a star player. He doesn't have to be a superstar because I'm banking on Stevens having a disciplined system like Popovic's so we are not reliant on a superstar to win titles.
