Its being reported the Celtics have acquired Tyler Zeller Marcus Thorton and a first rounder. It doesnt seem like the Celtcs may have just gave up a second rounder? Stay tuned

Sounds like it's for the PP trade exception and a second rounder. Im OK with Zeller he has potential he had some nice games last season, we needed a center. He's only 24 and still on his rookie deal. Good job DA

Zeller will be owed $1.7 million this year and $2.6 million next year, which is a team option. The third year he would be a restricted free agent with a qualifying offer of $3.6 million. Marcus Thornton is in the final year of his contract with the Nets and will make 8.6 million dollars. The Celtics will also get a future first round pick from Cleveland. As for what the Celtics give up, the answer is - not much.
The TPE, which the Celtics got in the Pierce/KG trade, was set to expire on Saturday. I believe that the Cavs are trying to clear cap space in order to be able to make a max offer to LeBron. Danny was happy to facilitate that with the TPE and get two useful players and a pick in return. The Cavs' pick will be top 10 protected in 2016, 2017 or 2018. It will be unprotected in 2019. Something tells me that with 2 number 1 picks in the past 4 years and the possibility of getting LeBron James, their pick won't be in the top 10 in 2016.
This may more about gathering more assets than about the players themselves though. Rondo, Bass, Anthony and now Thornton are all players with contracts expiring this year. That's almost $33 million that will come off the books at the end of this season. The Celtics also gather another pick from Cleveland. If the Celtics can't get Kevin Love this season, they will have the cap space and assets to bring in some big free agents next season. Not exactly fireworks, but a good use of the TPE (Traded Player Exception) and more assets for future moves.

We had to use our trade exception. Seems more like a way to clear cap and pick up a player in Zeller to add some depth at center. Not great though. The chase for kevin love continues. Tyler Zeller will go with Iverson I guess.

Good trade overall. Thornton can score and we needed a guard to do that and Zeller can block some shots. C's are treading water this year. Better than spending on Bayless and Humphries I guess. Doesn't get me excited for this year though. Unless we make a move for Love at the deadline. We can't trade these guys right away and if we go into the season with Rondo its the same thing. Either deal him or make a move for Kevin Love.
We resigned Bradley. Now we've kind of put the stamp on the trade exception and bayless and Humphries. Just going d own the line. Now comes what to do with Rondo. Seems to me like this is it and we are going into the season with him but we will see I guess. C's are focusing on clearing cap because there weren't deals out there to be had.
Smart practical thing to do. We are playing chicken with Kevin Love and Minny is going to lose him first where we can just sign him as a free agent if all else fails.
Not the most exciting thing in the world.

With the way money is being talked about to guys like Hayward and Ariza I would expect Green to opt out of his deal next season. That will be over $40 mil coming off the books.

Will Iverson stick? I believe Zeller will be starting at center game 1. Someone has to go Fav or Iverson. I like Zeller he's not a all star but he is an upgrade at the center position for us

Love this trade. We get Zeller and a future first, and give up basically nothing. We still have tons of cap room going into 2015. Zeller is no great shakes, but he can at least eat up some of the minutes at center. I doubt we bother signing a vet center now. This team is ready for one more down year, then it's time to make a splash in 2015.

I don't know if this increases or decreases our chances of keeping rondo. I would say increases. Still gaining assets to make a big move potentially. The wait just got longer Is all.

Fav is the much better player.

I'm not so sure that Danny WANTS to keep Rondo. He sure is loading up on guards and when he drafted Smart, for the first time I started to think that he might actually be looking to replace RR. I wouldn't be surprised to see him keep Rondo though and look to deal Smart along the way. I don't really see both staying along with Avery in the long term.

I like the deal, because the TPE was about to expire. Zeller could thrive under Stevens.

Supposedly Cleveland was forcing this to make room for LeBron. Zeller isn't a bad prospect by any means. I remember liking him as a prospect because he can score in small spaces and range outside and can pick and pop and roll. He's not a great basketball player by any means but he does the little things pretty well and is pretty fundamentally sound. Not the most upside in the world. But getting Zeller, Thornton and a 1st round pick for nothing is quite a bit. It fills needs. We needed a center, a sparkplug cheap and got another asset in a 1st round pick. STill depends what Ainge does with all these picks though. All the good player sin the league aren't coming to us apparently.
All these picks are all well and good but they don't do anything for us as it stands. We can hope someday we have a team like Cleveland is putting together. If DA helped Cleveland get LeBron and Love he pretty much surrendered on these guys and we just didn't' have enough to get it done this offeason.

Accumulating assets. Zeller if I recall was an all-american in college.
