Is he that good defensively that he'd make a difference? And how much of a difference?

he used to be a really good rim protector and rebounder when he played for the bulls. I don't know if that was it though and how washed up he is.

Is he that good defensively that he'd make a difference? And how much of a difference? He's a phenomenal post defender. Top five defensive center IMO. Rivals Marc Gasol when it comes to footwork and knowing where to be on D. Also a very good rebounder and a solid passer for a seven footer. On the flip side, he is a complete mess on offense. His offensive game is basically offensive rebound putbacks and the occasional lob pass for a dunk. He is an awful free throw shooter as well.

Sounds like Perk (except for the rebounding part).
Being reunited with defensive coach Ron Adams (who was Asik's defensive coach in Chicago) may turn out to be a good thing.

Perk was definitely a good low post defender. But he is not nearly as good as Asik when it comes to team defense. And that's not a knock on Perk. Perk was a solid defender in his day. But Asik is elite. Once I get off work CPU I will try to find some info that illustrates the difference Asik makes on the defensive end.

Asik is very quick at getting to the rim and protecting it from the small stints of seen of him. He seems to have a knack for just protecting the rim. Perk was more a physical defender and would not allow players into the paint. Perk would bully you a bit. I have nt seen enough of asik to know if he still has it though. But I just remember highlights of him in Chicago with his arms all over the rim. he would come out of nowhere at times.

his awareness and quick feet defensively are very good. he makes up ground and takes the right angles defensively or something and times his leaps. he has a motor on defense.
perk was more aggressive and big and mean and smart himself and would get after you too and similar but different.
asik might not be as tough as perk or have their heir about him as far as a leader. but he is more skilled defensively.

If we have asik on this team next year we would be much better record wise imo. Rim protection was a major weakness for us and a big reason between a win and a loss on many occasions. Had ainge made the deal sooner we wouldn't be as far up in the lottery as we are. I think ainge was trying to not sacrifice our future but getting asik is good.
If we are going to go with Sully and KO he fits perfectly. If we are going to make trades he gives us a lot of options. It's a good deal and he fits in a lot of ways.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=z0IFNcYpKzg more cool music for a late night. moves his feet well. positions himself well . always aware. left hand up at the right time. right hand up at the right time. tommy would love him. he is fundamentally sound defensively. I still think trading for asik is a win/win for the Celtics waiting to see what else is out there.
