Team Connections
Lakers Assistant Coach Brian Shaw was originally drafted by the Celtics with the 24th pick in the 1988 Draft
Ron Artest and Shelden Williams were teammates in Sacramento during the 2007-08 season
Marquis Daniels was teammates with DJ Mbenga in Dallas from 2004-06
Josh Powell and Marquis Daniels were teammates in Dallas during the 2005-06 season and in Indiana during the 2006-07 season.

Key Matchups
[image] vs[image]
Rajon Rondo vs Derek Fisher
The Lakers have been shopping Fisher because of his inability to stop younger PG's. Rondo must be aggressive in this game and exploit that weakness. On the other side of it, Fisher is capable of hitting big shots and Rondo must play tough defense to keep Fisher from getting hot.

[image] vs [image]
Kendrick Perkins vs Andrew Bynum
Perk and Bynum are both centers who love to bang in the paint. For the Lakers, Bynum gives them a little muscle inside to help counteract their soft image. Perk has been struggling recently since KG's return and the Celtics will need a strong game defensively from him in order to keep the Lakers out of the paint.

[image] vs [image]
Kevin Garnett vs Pau Gasol
There is no denying that KG hasn't looked quite himself since coming back from the injury. His shot was blocked several times against the Kings and he has also lost a step defensively. Gasol is playing very well and the Celtics need the tough defensive KG back. KG has got to bring his A game on defense in this one.

Game Notes
 The Lakers are currently leading the season series 1-0; The Lakers won the season series 2-0 against Boston in the 2008-09 season
 Paul Pierce led the Celtics with 20.5 points per game last season against the Lakers…he also averaged a team-high 9.0 rebounds per game
 Kobe Bryant led the Lakers with an average of 26.5 points per game
 The Celtics are 4-11 against the Lakers since the 2004-05 season
 The Celtics are leading the all-time series 151-120 with the Celtics 77-45 at home

The Celtics began their post All Star break road trip off to a good start with a win over the Kings. But, the team still struggled in spite of getting the win. They must play better against the Lakers if they expect to get a win.

There are questions all over the place surrounding this game. The trade deadline is at 3:00 PM and with both teams actively trying to make a trade and it is hard to tell who will be on the teams and who won't. Trades could affect the chemistry of either team. Another question is whether or not Kobe will play. Lakers are saying that he will be a game time decision. Personally I can't see him not playing in this game but if his ankle is indeed still too weak to play then Shannon Brown will get the start in his place.

The still have to be stinging from Kobe's last second shot that beat them in the Garden. If there is one game this season that the Celtics should be motivated for, it is this one. Let's hope that they have put the trade rumors and uncertainty behind them and bring their A game in this one. Anything less will result in yet another loss.

Keys to the Game
Defense - Both in the Paint and on the Perimeter The Celtics must get their defensive focus and trust back and play the team defense that has made them so tough to beat in the past. Recently we have seen this defense in spurts, but the Celtics must get back to playing solid defense for 48 minutes.

Rebound - Rebounding is effort and desire and the Celtics have been showing neither as they have repeatedly allowed teams to out rebound them. The Celtics need to put out more effort and crash the boards to prevent the Lakers from getting second chance points and fast breaks off the rebounds.

Keep their Focus The Celtics have to come out strong and stay focused for 48 minutes. They can't play in spurts and expect to win against the top teams. The Starters must especially get their cohesion and focus back.

X-Factor
Focus
Can the Celtics regain their focus and get back to playing as a championship caliber team?

Wow that first picture of Derek Fisher when he had hair almost fooled me into thinking it was Rasheed Wallace in a Lakers uniform.

I think the biggest matchup for me would be our bench vs the Lakers bench. Stopping Lamar Odom and Shannon Brown will be key especially after Brown's big game yesterday. Its likely that these 2 will see alot more minutes especially if Bynum is going to be only playing limited minutes.

The bench hasn't showed up this game. They lost that lead we had and now we're playing catch up.

Hopefully, Nate will shake things up.

We're also a poor rebounding team.

Taking bad shots down the stretch when every possession counts.

A win is a win, I know. But I don't feel good about this win. I breathed a sigh of relief after Fisher missed that three point attempt.

C'mon, this is a Kobe-less team. We were mostly at full strength. I'm disappointed we lost that lead in the 3rd quarter. This is happening way too often. This cannot happen if we want to win the championship.

I agree with you 100%. I have never been so unhappy after watching the Celtics win. That fourth quarter was PATHETIC! If Kobe plays, I guarantee the Lakers win the game. Only 11 points, and not one good possession down the stretch. Pierce and Garnet look like a shadow of what they used to be, we still give up an atrocious amount of offensive boards (outscored 20-10 on second chance points) and our offense disappears for long stretches at a time. Plus we ended every quarter poorly (LA scores last 7 pts of 1st quarter, ends 2nd quarter on a 12-6 run, Rondo turns the ball over late in the 3rd and Farmar gets a wide open 3 as a result, cutting the lead down to 7 when we could have pushed it to 12). We must be the worse fourth quarter team in the league -- our execution just goes out the window.

At least we tightened things up defensively after that 13-0 fourth quarter run by the Lakers, and Perk was a beast once again. But we just can't close teams out, and once again benefited from our opponents missing a bunch of free throws. 2-0 looks like a good start to the road trip, but many of our weaknesses (offensive rebounds, turnovers, offensive lapses, surrendering 10+ point leads) still haunt this team. We cannot win in the playoffs if we keep giving up so many offensive rebounds and don't improve on our ability to get good shots.

I don't mean to sound like a kill-joy, or a sore winner, but I miss the way this team used to play.

Thing is our offense slowed down when Daniels came into the game for stretches. I dont think this game would have been as close had we had robinson to be honest. Perfect example of where he will help. But that's against kobeless laker team.

down the stretch with rondo in the game our ball movement and just movement off the ball stopped. We iso'd pierce and forgot about ray and everyone else. No real excuse for that. Nate Rob isnt going to help with that.

Kobe is there it would have been close and we have to close out games better than that. We got lucky a bit fisher and gasol were handlign the ball and taking last second heaves instead of Kobe. We have to keep moving off the ball in close games.

Horribly bloody 4th quarter...11 points...thats honestly pathetic for a playoff team. Plus can someone tell Sheed to goddamn well stop getting Ts? Its getting out of hand and 3 more Ts = game suspensions.

After some thought, maybe we weren't as bad as our close stats indicated. Sure the Lakers were without Kobe but this is still a highly talented team that beat the Jazz not long ago without Kobe. Plus despite our offense doing a disappearing act in the 4th, our defense held the Lakers to under 20 points. Granted having Kobe around would have helped but we're slowly coming back. Our bench played bad but Ray showed some life..a spark that was missing in a long time..however, having the hot hand made Doc leave him in there far longer than I would have liked but we didn't have any other long range shooter so when Nate arrives, that should help. As for Perkins, its nice to see him get out of his mini slump and start collecting those boards and points. Although we still got outrebounded, I attribute that to our big men getting into foul trouble early. Our defense finally came up huge when we needed it and its something worth praising. Its never easy to hold a slim lead especially against guys like Gasol and Odom but we did it. Sure we shouldn't have given it up but just like how our bench bailed us out before, our starters sometimes have to bail out bench out as well...its a cycle. All in all, I'm still going to call it an ugly win because its obviously no Madonna or The Last Supper but you could call it The Scream.

A win is a win no matter how. Maybe we were just doing the Rip Van Winkle thing for the 1st half of the season. Now maybe the boys will tune up and get ready for the wars ahead. If we get Robinson he will be an improvement for sure. There may be enough spark left to create a fire.

IMO we should have won this game by at least 10-15 points without Bryant playing. I'll take any win in LA, but this feels like a loss. I hope we play well and beat the Blazers tonight and then get ready for the Cavs. If we can win these games ugly, I will take it, but I really hope we can get Nate into the flow asap and get some momentum going for the playoffs. Because all you need is 16 wins, and they don't have to be pretty, they all count the same. I'll gladly win a title like the 1995 Rockets did. It wasn't pretty, but it still counts.

And I would also like to thank Eddie for what he has done the last 2.5 years. I would welcome him back if we could find a way where he fit our bench better.

This is the bad part about the outcome of the game. The Lakers are a good team, even without Kobe. And if we struggle against a Kobe-less team when we are near full strength, it doesn't speak well for our chances of beating them with Kobe.

But a couple of things that I am holding on to--1) Pierce's leg isn't in top physical conditioning yet. He's lost a step since his injury, and is starting to work on strengthening it back up to par. We should be better once Pierce is back to normal. 2) We can hope that Nate is going to help our bench scoring (which is pretty anemic).

Next game after Blazers is Nuggets I think. They'll be someone we have to beat because as good as the Blazers are, they won't be coming out of the Western conference. It'll be either the Lakers or the Nuggets and its looking more and more like the Nuggets after they beat the Cavs yesterday.

Yeah the Lakers didn't have Kobe but we didn't have Nate. Wait til we get him then we'll really kick the Fakers a**. :P

The Celtics did show flashes of the championship season but their half court execution during the stretch run was awful. Jumpers from KG, Rondo and PP. Is that really the best we can muster in the fourth when the game is on the line?

I think the bench will really benefit with Nate the great because he won't let the offense get stagnate when the second unit is out there. What attitude he brings to the locker room is completely another question.
