 NBA investigating Babys' outburst
« Thread Started on Jan 21, 2010, 2:09pm »

Via the Herald:

An NBA spokesperson said today that the league is indeed investigating Glen Davis’s vulgar outburst directed toward a heckler at last night’s Celtics-Pistons game.

The incident took place during a second quarter timeout. The patron’s taunting struck a nerve with Big Baby and led to his comments, which could be heard on the television and radio telecasts. T

he fan, who identified himself as Scott Zack, filed a complaint with NBA security.

And now, Davis, who, according to Doc Rivers, is likely not to receive any team punishment, may instead feel the heat from the NBA disciplinary folks.

The NBA would be better suited to spend their time investigating their incompetent refs than to investigate Big Baby lashing out at a loud mouth fan who was way out of line taunting him throughout the game. We've seen players much more mature than Baby lash out at obnoxious fans, including physical retrobution. I don't blame Baby. At least he just shut him up with a graphic verbal response rather than with a punch in the mouth, which other players might be more inclined to do.

Baby was fined 25,000 for his comments. That makes 85,000 in fines for the Celtics in the past week or so.

Totally agree with you! They're wasting their time on this stuff rather than focusing their attention on getting better refs.

I don't think what Baby did was wrong tho...I mean if somebody was talking ish about me I'd probably do the same. I'm jst glad Baby reacted verbally and not physically cuz I don't want him getting hurt again.

Yeah I guess the NBA is just being overly cautious and blowing things out of proportion..but I just can't forget about the Malice in the Palace. Things can really get out of control in Detroit.

What is it that happened? Did any of it show up on the game last night?

BBD has got to get control of his emotions. Dude needs to take a lesson from Ray Allen. He's the epitome of professional.

When it comes to fan stuff like that, the line is blurred. Fans should have to follow some sort of decorum, but on the flip side, he paid for a ticket. He should feel free to express himself. I wonder what was said that got Baby so worked up?

ESPN says he kept yelling at Baby that Baby was fat and slow and stuff like that. Kept talking about Baby's weight. So Baby retaliated by swearing at him. You wont find it on any video footage but there is a soundtrack of it. To be honest, baby just needed to walk away. Sure he didn't deserve a huge fine for just swearing at a fan because fans do it all the time, its not the first time a player has done it, players swear all the time and honestly swearing is barely an insult these days since everyone does it..but Baby really needed to walk away..if he can't walk away from stuff like this, then it means his game can easily be affected by taunts and jeers.

At the Detroit game there was a jerk sitting behind the Celtics bench and was heckling Big Baby non stop. He was calling him fat baby and telling him to go on a diet and calling him chubs, etc. So during one time out, he got particularly irritating and Big Baby said something very graphic to him about a part of his anatomy and Gorman's mike picked it up.

Agreed. I remember right after the brawl in Detroit that George Gervin had a great quote that basically said that players from his generation put with neverending racial taunts and they never let it get the best of them, and now this guy is beating up fans because someone threw a beer? Players from back in the day bit their lip and dealt with all that nonsense and in turn made the league what it is today. If those guys could act professional in environments more hostile then we could even imagine today, modern NBA players should be able to hold back when a fan makes cracks about their weight. Sounds to me like BBD deserved this.

people like scott "no sack" should be investigated for being collosal douchebags. he was probably verbally abusing davis and when davis said the same things back he runs and tells security. i hate people like that who think because they pay to go to a game they can be collosal douchebags. he was probably like that too. "I paid to go to this game and a player was really abusive to me." That guy deserved to be punched in the head and can't take what he dishes out.

it's the equivalent of walking up to some huge dude on the street and calling him a (censored) and then running to your mommy that you got punched int he head when he deserved to be punched in the head.

yeah davis should have taken the higher road, but that still doesnt change the fact that the guy was a douchebag. baby should have been smarter and reported the guy and got him the hell out of the arena.

The league is just as lame.

It's the same with people who talk (censored) from behind a computer screen who think because they are behind a computer tey can say whatever they want. I have fun with those people and they never can take what they dish out and are so obvious. No balls. Can't stand those people.

I spoke w/ an associate where I work w/ today on this topic. How come in the NBA, you can attend the game, and "heckle" a player? Davis isn't right, but Scott "i have no" Sack isn't right either. And, he had the brass to file a complaint w/ the NBA? :-[

You can do it in every sport. It's probably most previlent in baseball. It happens in hockey and football as well, but there is more of a barrier between the fans and players in those two.

There are going to be idiots in all lines of work. Who here hasn't worked in some aspect of the service industry and gotten treated like garbage by someone? But if you're a professional, you gotta let that stuff slide.

They really should come up with a new "douchebag" law though not just in sports but in all walks of life. There isn't one to my knowledge. Some people go through life and are complete douchebags to people and get away with it and then one some good guy who has just had enough acts out, that person gets thrown in jail. It happens all the time. Such is this hypocrisy of a world we live in I guess. It's funny because it's so true.

K+ for that thought.

Seems like a career in sports has different guidelines than a career in non-sports. Light "heckling" I am somewhat open to, though how does one draw the line?
