Once upon a time, we had a young, athletic, defensive minded 6'4" wing player who showed some potential offensively. He was a pretty useful, and in my opinion, important role player off the bench for us in our championship season of '08.
Tony Allen, as we all know, left for a more meaningful role and higher pay.
Fast forward 4 years, and we have ourselves another young, athletic, defensive minded 6'4" wing player who shows some offensive punch. Avery Bradley went from being a nobody as a rookie, to being a player Doc is growing to trust in his tight rotation.
So how does Avery Bradley stack up against the role Tony Allen provided for us? In what ways do you see him replacing Tony and in what ways do you think Tony was better at.
And overall, who would you rather have?

Tony and Bradley are both great defensive players thats a given. Bradley seems quicker and less injury prone so far as opposed to TA.
The difference is their offense..I reckon Bradley is better offensively because he has a jumpshot hes working on while Tony relied heavily on drives to the basket.

Tony had the ability to separate himself from his defender and get to the front of the rim. But he usually would make poor decisions and get called for offensive fouls, or he'd miss point blank layups. That disappointed me about Tony.
I'd like to see Bradley become a penetrator who gets by his man and gets to the rim. He's already showing some promise with his jumper, so having the penetrstion in his aersenal will give him other options.
Ainge always talked about Bradley have lottery type potential, and we're beginning to see it.

I think Bradley is potentially a much better player. TA was pretty limited and relied mainly on his demeanor and athletic ability but he played the game like a thug in ways. He wasn't very skilled. I think bradley is a better, more skilled player.
I think the difference is Bradley's demeanor. He's willing to learn and improve as a player. TA limited himself and was what he was.
TA was a roleplayer. Bradley is potentially a really good player and doesn't have the same limitations.

Bradley has a higher ceiling than Allen, if you compare them to when they entered the NBA. Plus, Bradley has a higher basketball IQ.

Bradley is young so im very interested to see what sorta moves he continues to add to his arsenal. Right now he is looking very efficient scoring wise..I think the next step for him to take is to improve his fakes the way Pierce does...faking a jump shot before bursting with his speed to the rim IF the defender bites on the fake. He has the speed to get to the rim very quickly

Yeah, 19 years old, already a hard worker who wants to get better, who plays defense at an All-Defensive team level (could work his way up to the 1st team by next year), and has a developing offensive game. It'll be fun to watch how good he becomes in 2 years when he's at the ripe old age of 21
He shows signs of having a pull up jumper off the dribble -- a combo guards best friend. And this to go along with his developing 3 point shot too.

At 2:50 in this video I like his pull up jumper with a little fake thrown in
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LPoW5RAr_ro
TA never did anything close to that. I think AB is just a better basketball player and skilled.
He moves off the ball. Plays within the offense. He is a very sound defensive player. He can shoot. Drive. Has athleticism. I don't think he is limited.
His only limitation is his height. But he can jump out of the gym so that really isn't a limitation. Joe Dumars wasn't as athletic and had a hall of fame career by just sheer tenactity and an understanding of the game.
He also isn't a flashy distributor like Rondo but he can pass the ball and get players the ball in spots and be a distributor.
He can break down a defense and is learning that. I heard doc the other game as bradley was driving saying kick it and bradley did. Doc is teaching him those things. how to break down a defense and make the correct pass. He's not rondo b ut he can pass the ball.
I've heard it all. He's not a pg. He's not a starter. He's not this. IT's like KG the other night. You called us old, over... Players can learn and have ability. It's a mindset with Bradley and he hasn't closed himself off.
I don't like calling someone a thug but TA does fit that description in ways. I actually think TA got a raw deal by some fans in ways when he was here. He was more set in who he was is all. Bradley is a nice guy. His defensive mindset comes from that I guarantee.
I think bradley is going to amaze people how good of an offensive player he actually becomes.
I think he will score a lot of points. Danny Ainge isn't the only person who saw it.
Doc Rivers sees it. Paul Pierce. KG sees it. I see it. A lot of people see it.
People just had to find him. A good man is hard to find. It's no different than a good player.
I've heard it. Bradley will never be able to break people down off the dribble. Bradley will be one of our best offensive players in a bit. never say never.

I think Bradley needed that fire lit under him. He is too nice. It's always been there. He's just young and isn't that rough around the edges yet. He isn't battle tested. I think that's what will make him a better player along with help from his teammates who show him the way.

Yeah, he's carving out quite an opening for his future with the way his game has improved.
His college coach says Bradley should be a 2, not a 1 because Avery can score (or more like Avery wants to score). But as you say, Doc is helping him to also learn to pass the ball. In time I think it'll come.
He'll drive and kick it out, or he'll drive and take it himself.
With his current development, it'll be interesting to see how good he can become in a few years. It'll be good if he can learn how to syncrinize with Rajon.

bradley is that shy kid who just listens and doesn't say much. But that fire is starting to come out for him. He's starting to become aggressive. I love watching him play. He's got heart. Had he gone to another team or city he may have never figured it out. Some players just become complacent and don't improve. Thats why boston is a great city to be in. Fans never let you rest. So he's lucky in that regard.
Boston may be ignorant, racist everything in between. Bill Russell dealt with the same things but it makes the strong get stronger.
I think that's what bradley needs to do is just keep working at it. Becoming tenacious. Gaining that confidence to take that shot.
Pierce has become mr. clutch here when people used to criticize his ball handling as well. Were they right? Yeah in ways. But I think most people never even thought Pierce would get better. he got better.
Bill Russell got better. There is no doubt in my mind barring injury which sucks that bradley will get better. Pierce even fought himself back from stab wounds in this city. He got better.
I think the celtics find these types of guys. That's what makes them stand out. KG is an unselfish player as well who has had to learn to take that shot and carry the team on his back at times. But all these guys are inherently team oriented and about their team. Tom Brady same thing. They are team oriented players at their core. I'll take 5 guys like that any day.
Rondo has struggled with teh same things. I think fans want him to be a better player and take that shot but he has struggled with that. It's not part of his game at least yet.
Joe Johnson, Al Jefferson these were players like this as well who the C's didnt hold onto long enough. Perk is the same kind of player. Even Kedrick Brown. Even Antoine. He wasn't shy but I think the team at the time never put him in position to succeed. I think Antoine had a huge heart. I think stories like antoine and kedrick are tragic. Because I see it. I know what antoine needed. Same with Kedrick. It's tragic. These were talented players who just never made it. They fell by the wayside instead. I think the celtics should feel some responsibility for that.
The celtics were in a shithole themselves. Bad Ownership. Bad structure at the top. And players that came through at that time kind of speak to that. They failed. Kedrick failed. JJ was let go way too early. Antoine became a mess. It's tragic. I think those players should take responsibility but they were young kids at the time. I think antoine tried to make a comeback but it's too late in ways as far as his basketball career is concerned.

I guess my point is delving too deep it's not as simple as just saying Bradley is better or more talented. he also has the benefits of an organization around him who is willing to teach him what he needs. My guess from looking at him he probably comes from a good family. had the benefits of being patient and learning, and has had to learn to get tougher. Pierce same thing. Had bradley ended up elsewhere he may have remained soft. TA on the other hand may have been raised in the ghetto for all we know, and was taught to be tough at a young age and to just go for whatever he could get. He never learned to be patient and learn the intricacies of the game and just focused on being a defensive stopper and was really aggressive. If bradley wa s on another team he might have been a decent player, but it's more about the c's and him just being what each other needs.
You'd have to delve into the psyche's of these players. I think ainge was kind of ignorant when it came to antoine. I think antoine knew what he needed and really wanted to be part of a better organization and it drove him nuts and people really failed him. you always hear these stories about antoine being really generous and i think it was a cry for help in ways. he was never disciplined as a player and really taught the game.
It's not that simple. i think bradley is really lucky in that regard. he has an organization around him and great players to learn from that teach basketball and life and are willing to be patient. There's a lot that goes into the development of players and people and people can be really ignorant sometimes.
TA needed to learn to slow down and learn the game. Antoine same thing. bradley is doing that. I think bradley just really had the benefits of being able and allowed to do that.
